Mission Impossible? How to Motivate Those Who Do Not Want To Study

L’Orma’s Tips On the Use of Non-Formal Teaching Tools

“You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped”. We’ve all heard this sentence.
For example, think of a patience who refuses to take the medicine prescribed by  doctors, or someone who needs therapy but not willing to participate or someone who doesn’t follow his/her diet made up by dietitians or parents who cannot support the choices made by their children.

We asked ourselves what to do in a situation when it happens to children or teenagers and our answer is: education.

We can say: ‘if you do not want to learn and study, to participate in the classes, just go home.’ Obviously, we cannot do that.

In fact, there is a difference. On one hand, the mandatory education between the age of 6 and 16 guarantees the opportunity to every kid to be educated, but on the other hand it has taken away the freedom of choice and has become a duty.

School education therefore puts teachers in a very complex and difficult position, namely that of educating a large number of children and adolescents, some of them who are not there by choice and do not want to be there.

This is exactly why we need teachers who have the necessary competences and the will to constantly develop themselves and the ambition to know their students and learn from them.

Mission impossible then? Not at all! Of course, it requires a bit of commitment and a change of perspective.

We should review the pre-established proposals in a way that integrates the in-depth analysis of a topic and makes sense to student and encourage them to solve the task properly.

But the reality is that motivation is still too often considered given and taken for granted. Furthermore, time is one of the most common constrains. How is it possible to complete the whole program and dedicate time to more transversal activities?

The use of non-formal education as a teaching method helps all who believe in and focus on the importance of creating inspiring environment.

In fact, it allows students to learn the curriculum and at the same time gives them incentives to study actively, to be more engaged. Teachers can use this method as a tool to manage the time better to create a sort of balance between standardized programming (curriculum) and the actual learning of the students.
